Oracle Cloud’s services are ideal for businesses to boost their cloud presence by making the most of cloud computing. Oracle offers a wide range of “building block” software that can be used to build easily-scalable applications and provide enterprise software features such as databases and security products. The company also provides managed services that provide 24/7 monitoring, automatic failover, and disaster recovery — high peace of mind.

Oracle has tactically aligned and assured accessibility of Oracle Software to the client base by enabling the use of Oracle Software along with other cloud services providers. Along with that, Oracle has created its own cloud service for customers to offer efficient solutions for businesses with IT expertise.

It can be difficult to talk about the cloud. There are hundreds of tools, equipment, and terminology differences among vendors. In this article we will discuss Oracle Cloud in detail and look to explain the advantages of Oracle Cloud services.

What is Oracle Cloud?

Oracle Cloud is an amazing cloud computing service provided by Oracle with storage, servers, apps, network, and services using a global network of managed data centers.

Oracle Cloud offers Data as a Service (DaaS), Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Software as a Service (SaaS), and Platform as a Service (PaaS) which develops, seamlessly integrates, deploys, and extends apps in the cloud.

This platform backs various open standards, open-source solutions along with a number of databases, programming languages, tools, and frameworks spanning Oracle-specific, and third-party software and solutions. So, SaaS, IaaS, DaaS, and PaaS are the primary categories of the cloud computing universe. Let’s try to understand in detail.

What is IaaS?

Infrastructure-as-a-Service

Source

Infrastructure as a Service or IaaS enables you to shift all on-premise conventional apps to hardware in an Oracle Data Center. By doing so, you leverage high class performance and dependability with a basic cost structure and pricing that enables app scalability for growth.

On-premise data centers need an upfront investment and also management responsibilities including space allocation, maintenance, continuity of operations, power, software licensing, and security. They also need a solid workforce to support data center operations.

With this approach, apps can be seamlessly migrated to your IaaS environment safely in the cloud. This is only possible as long as licensing and app support allows. IaaS has various services that work to offer a reliable and stable solution. Some of these services are:

Compute

Completely dedicated Bare Metal Instances or Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) Bare Metal Instances are provided. The compute works as a single tenant hardware component that enables total control of the host. Another alternative is Virtual Machine Instances where there is no need to control. You can choose from a preconfigured set of OS images or even contribute your own Custom OS image. There are multiple configurations available based on your business’ storage and latency needs.

Storage

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Object Storage offers unstructured data storage in buckets that offer growth. On the other hand, it provides the flexibility to pay only for the services that you use. It is possible to build unlimited buckets and are able to store multiple objects in the same buckets. Data Redundancy is offered automatically as various object copies are stored and spread across different domains.

Data Integrity is monitored by the use of checksums with any loss of data redundancy being auto-detected and mediated. Server side encryption with AES256 is automatic along with offering data security. OCI Block Volume is available for storage sizes starting from 50GB to 2TB using NVMe-based Solid State Drives.

OCI Block Volume also provides encrypted backups for better data security in object storage. A compute instance can include 32 volumes of OCI Block Volumes. OCI Data Transfer Service is a data migration tool to upload large quantities of data to OCI.

Networking

The OCI Virtual Cloud Network (VCN) is an intrinsic piece of the OCI offering. When building a Compute node, you will definitely need to set up networking for your instance. VCN is a single IPv4 CIDR block of choice that comes with a private network, subnet, internet gateway, Dynamic Routing Gateway, route tables, security list, firewall, DHCP options and communications gateway.

Governance

OCI Audit is facilitated by default at no extra cost which records all API endpoint calls to provide auditing service in your OCI environment. Audit records are not instant but are available in 15 minutes from the point of occurrence of the event. This event is generally stored in JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) format. OCI Identity and Access Management comes by default at no extra cost. OCI users can be developed and maintained, whereas privilege management in your infrastructure resources can be secured in a single policy driven component. OCI Tagging enables you to apply information or operational tags to resources included in your OCI environment.

Database

Oracle Database Cloud Service offers an on-demand pay-as-you-go database model on dedicated hardware with local NVMe storage. High and dense I/O configurations are single instance databases. Two Node RAC configurations are available too. Oracle Exadata Cloud Service Bare Metal offers high-quality performance engineered system capability in quarter, half and full rack configurations.

Load Balancing

It works along with the OCI VPN to provide public IP addresses load balancing in or across various Domains. It offers High Availability to avoid single failure points and managed using API or web console to update app nodes. Extra features like SSL Offloading, Traffic Shaper, multi-layered security to load balancing workloads.

Edge Services

Oracle is currently providing OCI DNS solutions along with email delivery.

Containers

OCI Containers enable container-based microservices and server-less apps to be developed, deployed, and operate using open source tools. For users who are well versed with Docker, this is Oracle’s mechanism for containerization.

Ravello

This option enables you to bring your VM setup on premise to simplify the migration onto OCI hardware.

Fast Connect

It is OCI’s answer to enable traffic not crossing the Internet.

What is PaaS?

Source

Platform as a Service (PaaS) is developed on IaaS along with an amalgamation of integrated Oracle and open-source technologies. These different offerings are:

  • Data Management Service
  • App Development
  • Integration
  • Business Analytics
